Considering sponsoring one or more of our beloved orphans or widows? Your sponsorship helps to cover the cost of basic needs we provide inclusive of food, water, clothing, shelter as well as discipleship, education and health care. We host a multi-sponsor program allowing for children and widows to have multiple sponsors. A multi-sponsor model allows for us to better meet the cost of care for our orphans or widows while also making it more affordable for folks to be able to sponsor a child and/or widow monthly. Please note: We work to ensure every child and widow has at least one sponsor.

Why does Harvesters’ promote orphan and widow sponsorship?

Harvesters’ promotes orphan and widow sponsorship because we believe such activities are a natural response to the Bible’s call to transform this world through the message of the gospel of Christ. We further believe that such activities are a natural outgrowth of James 1:27 which states, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

What is the purpose of Harvesters’ orphan and widow sponsorship?

Our sponsorship program ensures that we are able to meet our mission to disciple, educate and provide health care for orphans worldwide through ongoing donations. We are working to realize a vision: a world where children are living as disciples of Christ, free from spiritual, economic and social poverty. As a sponsor, you will develop a real connection with the child you support. It’s a connection that will change both of your lives. You will learn about your child and you will play a significant role in their development through your support and prayers.

How much does it cost to sponsor a child or widow?

Can my child or widow have multiple sponsors?

Yes, as you might imagine it costs us quite a bit more than $30/month to take care of our children and $100/month for our widows. Since one of our goals is to keep the cost of sponsorship affordable so that more people can participate, we do take more than one sponsor per child and per widow.

Whether you choose to sponsor as an individual, as a family or a group (for example, a youth group or a Sunday school class), please know that your prayers, letters and support mean so much to our children and mamas (widows).

How much does it cost to care for an orphan at Harvesters?

It costs us approximately $200/month to take care of each orphan. This includes food, clothing, medicine, shelter, school and so much more. We take a holistic approach to child development, so our focus is on the full development of each child.

We recognize that our children have unique needs and unique gifts. We work hard to address the spiritual, economic, social and physical aspects of their lives so that they may become responsible and fulfilled Christian adults.

We are a unique ministry where evangelism and discipleship are at the heart of what we do. We believe that the Gospel should be presented to children at an early age so that as the Holy Spirit works, they will come to know Jesus as their personal Savior. As a result, children can begin to develop Christian character, which is the outward expression of a new inward life. Through discipleship, we expect to see our children mature in their Christian life by learning and living Biblical principles through the example and encouragement of others.

How important is prayer in Harvesters’ sponsorship?

Can I write cards and letters to my sponsored child or widow?

Yes…please do! As a sponsor, you have an opportunity to communicate with the child you sponsor and we encourage you to do so. When you communicate with him or her, however, we ask you to provide comments and materials consistent with Christian values. We cannot forward photographs and other materials depicting activities that:

Might be considered inappropriate in another culture.

Promote lifestyle choices that we view as unhealthy and inconsistent with biblically based lifestyles or otherwise inappropriate for sponsored children.

Might threaten the safety of the sponsored children in any way.

May I send gifts to my child or widow?

We ask that you do not send gifts for your individual sponsored child. Another challenge with sending gifts is the fact that we have nearly 200 children between our two campuses. We’re sure that you can understand the challenges and potential hurt feelings among children when some receive gifts and others do not. So we respectfully ask that you do not send gifts for your sponsored children. A special fund, called the “Celebration Fund,” has been established to provide resources to give parties and gifts for all of the children living at the orphanage. These monies are used for holiday celebrations, birthdays, and special occasions. This ensures that all of the children living at Harvesters have an opportunity to celebrate many happy occasions. If you wish to give to this fund in addition to your sponsorship, please write “Celebration Fund” in the memo section of your check made out to HRTN or select the “Celebration Fund” when making an online donation.

Will my child or widow write to me?

Yes. As a sponsor you are matched with a particular child and you will receive a profile card with their photo showing their date of birth and some information about them. You will receive communication regarding your sponsored child several times per year. This communication could include a drawing or letter from the child, an update from a teacher or caregiver, or an updated profile. For sponsors of children who are age three and younger, you may receive an updated photograph in lieu of a drawing.

How does Harvesters ensure that my support actually benefits the child I sponsor?

How long should my child sponsorship last?

Harvesters’ child sponsorship program offers you an opportunity to stay with a child for a number of years while they are living with us. While we hope that you will be able to continue in your support of your sponsored child until he or she leaves Harvesters, we recognize that sponsors’ circumstances sometimes change. You may discontinue your sponsorship at any time.

Please understand that a sponsored child’s circumstances may change, too. For example, as our children get older they move out into the community on their own. We will inform you as quickly as possible if any such circumstance affects the child you sponsor, and we’ll offer you the opportunity to support another child in need of your help
